Get more recent fiction for inspiration
The most well-known example of a character drawback is probably Tabula Rasa credits. This dominating pride led to his downfall, and was a main motivating factor throughout his whole story. However, that is some rather old fiction. If you want to get more recent fiction for inspiration, you had better check out Dr. Gregory House which is apparently a fairly awesome character, with multiple merits. Nevertheless, his pride and cynicism causes Dr. House to make stupid mistakes.
